DID YOU KNOW?
Welwyn Hatfield Council have a scheme called Reference Check with a telephone number you can call to find out the names of contractors that other people have used and have recommended. The number to call is;- 0500 0600 300. There are many grants available to help people live in their own home for details see leaflet -"Disabled Facilities Grant". Copies should be available from the One Stop Shop or the Citizens Advice Bureau.

NHS Direct 0845 4647
The following is an extract from the NHS Direct internet web site which might be of interest. When you call NHS Direct, 0845 4647, you are asked to provide some basic information about yourself and to describe the nature of your call. If you need advice about a health problem, you are asked if you are calling for yourself or on behalf of someone else and are required to explain:
What the symptoms are, how they affect you/the person and when they began;
What you/the person have tried already;
Any drugs you/the person are already taking;
Any existing medical conditions;
Anything else you think is relevant.
NHS Direct nurses use their skills and experience, together with a comprehensive computer system, to advise you on the most appropriate course of action to take. With the right advice and information, lots of non-serious health problems can be treated at home or following a visit to your local pharmacist. If the problem is more serious, you may need to see your doctor or go to hospital. Whatever the problem, the NHS Direct nurse will listen to the symptoms you describe and advise you what to do for the best. If your problem is very serious, they will connect you to the ambulance service. NHS Direct staff can also provide general information about local health services easily and quickly. For example, if you need to find out which pharmacies are open late or where you can see a dentist out-of-hours, NHS Direct staff will be able to help you. NHS Direct works hand in hand with other healthcare services provided by the NHS, helping you make the right choice to meet your needs. Calls to NHS Direct are charged at local rates and for patient's safety, all calls are recorded.

The New Partnership
The Elders Steering Committee will become part of a larger partnership for older people, with Watford Council, Social Services, Health Services and provider Voluntary Agencies.
These Partnership meetings have now been postponed until the constitution has been finalised.

Time Swap the future
Time Swap is now officially with Community Services. A review of the current list of members is being carried out and membership forms and other documents are being updated. The intention is to broaden the scheme to include all age groups and introduce Time Swap centres into various localities around Watford.
A small ad-hoc working group has been formed by the Watford Elders Steering group to help in this exiting new initiative.
It would seem to be a good idea to encourage youngsters to give their skills and put some of their energies into the community in return for help in pursuing their interests by the older members.
Please help in the re-launch of Time Swap by existing members completing the new forms, you will have received, and introducing the scheme to all your friends, young and old.
